Day 6 Womens – Top seed Wozniacki could be going home

Published:

Vera Zvonareva, Andrea Petkovic and Svetlana Kuznetsova were among the high profile women’s seeds to be eliminated from Wimbledon yesterday and Caroline Wozniacki may be the next big-name casualty to be dumped out today.

Number one seed Wozniacki faces Australian Jarmila Gajdosova, with neither player still having dropped a set in reaching the third round.

Wozniacki may have won both the previous meetings between the two and be the 1/6 favourite in the Wimbledon odds, but there are reasons to believe that Gajdosova can cause a shock.

She has improved immensely since the last of these defeats to Wozniacki in 2008 and pushed Venus Williams all the way at Wimbledon last year.

The quality of Gajdosova’s defence could be critical, but 7/2 may be worth taking that she reaches the fourth round.

One heavy favourite that should have no trouble progressing in the women’s draw is Ana Ivanovic and she is 1/7 to beat Petra Ctkovska.

Not only did Ivanovic win their only previous meeting 6-0, 6-0, but she has only lost four games so far in reaching the third round at Wimbledon.

Cetkovska has needed three sets to win each of her matches to date and 4/9 looks good value that Ivanovic can triumph in straight sets.

One match that looks tight to call is the first ever meeting between Julia Goerges and Dominika Cibulkova, with both players priced at 5/6 to achieve victory.

However, Goerges is positioned eight places higher in the women’s world rankings and has also reached this stage of the tournament without dropping a set.

Cibulkova was pushed to the limit to beat Mirjana Lucic to win a deciding set 8-6 in the opening round and has been dumped out of the third round at Wimbledon in each of the last three years.
