Clichy next for Liverpool as Henderson is confirmed

Liverpool may have only just completed the signing of Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, but they are wasting little time returning to the transfer market in order to strengthen their squad further.

The final details are yet to be confirmed in relation to the capture of Henderson, but it is believed that the total value of the deal will be around £20m.

Despite this hefty investment on the England under-21 midfielder, the Liverpool chequebook remains open in their quest to build a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season, with Arsenal defender Gael Clichy one of the next transfer targets

Henderson is certainly of the opinion that his switch to Anfield will not only improve his own ability, but also enhance his chances of winning some silverware.

He said: “Liverpool’s definitely the place to help me come on as a player, and improve me. The club’s going in the right direction and it can go as high as it wants. There is a lot to achieve.

“I’m sure that along the way there will be a lot of happy memories.”

It is 10/1 in the Premier Leagie odds that Liverpool win the title next season and 1/1 that they secure a top-four finish.

Liverpool have also identified left-back as a weak area in their squad, with the likes of Fabio Coentrao, Jose Enrique and Emilio Izaguirre all previously linked.

However, it is Clichy that may now head the shortlist and Liverpool are willing to test Arsenal’s resolve with a £5m offer.

Clichy has been a regular in the Arsenal team since 2005, but has only one year remaining on his present contract at the Emirates.

Talks over an extension to this contract have so far stalled and Arsenal may be willing to allow the 25-year-old Frenchman to leave this summer rather than see him walk away on a free transfer at the end of his deal.
