Carlton House set to smash betting records
Published:The Queen’s horse Carlton House is likely to ensure a record-breaking Derby for the betting industry, according to Ladbrokes.
Queen Elizabeth II hasn’t had a runner since 1981 when her horse Church Parade finished fifth behind the legendary Shergar – and she has NEVER won the Epsom Classic.
The horse had been promoted to favourite for the Derby after winning his trial race at York – but an injury setback earlier this week left Carlton House’s participation in serious doubt.
But on the eve of the Derby, Carlton House was back on track for the biggest Flat race of the year and racing is preparing for its biggest Summer day out by royal appointment.
David Williams of Ladbrokes said: “Nails had been bitten down to the wick but the news is positive and it’s going to be all systems go for a record-breaking Derby.
“The race is worth about £50 million to the betting industry in a normal year but the fact the Queen has the favourite could see that figure soar.
“If Carlton House hits the front in the home straight the roars of over 100,000 people on the Downs will be heard for miles around. He’ll be an incredibly popular winner.
“It’ll cost us a fortune and we’re already braced for it. Carlton House is on the brink of becoming a royal phenomenon and we’ll be paying for it big time.”
Kieren Fallon has also been cleared to ride 5/1 chance Recital in the Derby after a High Court hearing.
