Arsenal in controversial link to sign Tottenham striker

Spurs fans look away now – it has been reported in this morning’s press that Arsene Wenger is eyeing up Jermain Defoe to bolster the Arsenal attack.

Only a fortnight ago Defoe was ridiculed by Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp after expressing his frustration at his lack of first team chances last season, and there is a real threat that Defoe will leave the club this summer.

The Daily Star isn’t always spot on with it’s reports, but it’s the first paper to break the Defoe to Arsenal link and the ambitious Defoe would relish a move to Arsenal, even if it would upset ever Tottenham fan on the planet.

Robin van Persie was the Premier League’s star striker in 2011, scoring 23 goals in 25 appearances in the second half of the season, but the Dutchman doesn’t have a regular scoring partner to ease the burden.

Defoe, who is more than capable of getting 20 goals a season, would ease that Burden on van Persie and would provide a clinical edge to an Arsenal side that is more often than not, found wanting.

Nicklas Bendtner is on the radar of a number of European clubs and is expected to leave Arsenal in the summer after failing to establish himself in the first team and a replacement would be a high priority for Wenger.

After watching his team crumble following the Carling Cup final defeat to Birmingham in February, Wenger knows he must improve on all areas of the Arsenal squad with defence being the highest priority.

It would be a controversial switch and one that Defoe would have to prove brave enough to handle, but there’s no doubt he would enhance this Arsenal squad as they look to maintain a challenge for the Premier League title.
