Alex McLeish huge favourite to be next Aston Villa boss
Published:Alex McLeish has resigned as manager of Birmingham City – fuelling speculation he could be about to take the vacant hot seat at Aston Villa.
The news has seen McLeish’s odds on becoming the next Villa boss come crashing in to 1/2.
A statement on the Birmingham City website reads: “Birmingham City Football Club can confirm that Alex McLeish has resigned as manager,” said a statement on the club’s website.
“Acting chairman Peter Pannu received an e-mail resignation from McLeish earlier today [Sunday] while away on business in Amsterdam.”
A move from Birmingham to their bitter Midlands rivals would be controversial for both Villa and McLeish, but with Villa’s search for a new manager hardly going smoothly, there is a very real possibility the Scot could cross the divide.
Their No.1 target, Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, ruled himself out of the running on Friday leaving Villa back at square one in their search for a new boss following the departure of Gerard Houllier.
Second favourites for the post are Mark Hughes and Everton boss David Moyes who are both out at 9/2, while Leeds United boss Simon Grayson is third in the betting at 7/1.
