17:35 Royal Ascot: Overturn to provide fitting end to Royal Ascot

Published:

Can you believe it, after five days and 29 races the Queen Alexandra Stakes will sign off Royal Ascot in style and after a week in which plenty of stamina has been needed, punters should be searching for a horse with plenty of stamina in this race.

It offers a final chance of redemption or one last chance to put the boot in on the bookies, and after a marathon week, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is a fine way to end the meeting.

The Queen Alexandra Stakes is the longest race to be run in the Flat season at just under two miles and six furlongs, and while many of us toast our winnings or drown our sorrows, there will be 20 horses competing for the £31,155 prize.

There aren’t many races like this so the form is difficult to go on, but the market plays a huge role in this race with five winning favourites in the last 15 runs and just three winners of this have started double figures since 1995.

It’s a race in which upsets are rare and concentrating on the horses at the head of the market is the best strategy.

Overturn and Elyaadi are currently vying for favouritism at the top of the market with the latter just edging it at 7/2 and Overturn available at 4/1.

The trends would suggest four and five years old do better in this race but both of the market leaders are seven and eight years old, but none of the youngsters are trading at 10/1 or shorter.

The market will have a huge influence on this race and it seems it’s between the top two in the market and while the mare Elyaadi may enjoy the softer ground more, Overturn is more than capable of running on the soft ground.

As a National Hunt horse, Overturn will have stamina in abundance and the verdict goes with him, although the betting will be interesting.
