Watney’s consistency makes him serious Wells Fargo contender
Published:Nick Watney may have never finished in the top ten at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he should be expected to lay down a major challenge in the PGA Tour event this year.
Watney is 20/1 in the golf betting for the tournament and has been remarkably consistent at Quail Hollow in recent years without seriously threatening the leaders.
In six starts in the event, Watney has never missed a cut and finished in the top 25 on five of these occasions.
Watney has also been the model of consistency on the PGA Tour this season, never missing a cut in eight starts, accruing five top-ten finishes and winning the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Punters not fancying Watney to take the title should certainly consider backing him to finish above Jim Furyk, Hunter Mahan and Martin Laird.
Ladbrokes has placed the foursome in Group B and given odds on which player will finish highest on the leaderboard, with Watney’s consistency making him great value in the PGA Tour odds at 9/4.
Phil Mickelson is an obvious challenger in the eyes of many and is another player with a solid record in the Wells Fargo Championship.
Mickelson was runner-up in the tournament 12 months ago and has six top-12 finishes in seven appearances.
However, 12/1 may be a bit short on a player that disappointed on his latest start at the Masters.
At bigger prices, Zach Johnson certainly possesses the required class to go well and 100/1 looks generous odds for a player of his ability and one that threw away victory from a strong position two years ago.
Meanwhile, Mathew Goggin sits atop the money list on the Nationwide Tour and has been rewarded for his good form by gaining a sponsor exemption into the Wells Fargo Championship.
If Goggin can bring this form to the PGA Tour, then 125/1 could be a mammoth price on his chances.
