Three-quarters of Wigan supporters expect them to survive

Despite heading into the final weekend of the season in the bottom three, over three-quarters of Wigan fans believe the club will stay in the Premier League.

A poll on the official club website has discovered that 79 per cent of respondents feel the club will avoid relegation, meaning 21 per cent are of the opinion that the club will not get a good enough result at Stoke.

Wigan are currently 19th in the Premier League standings, but are level of points with both Blackpool and Birmingham above them.

Meanwhile, their goal difference is only two goals worse than Birmingham, who are 17th in the table at present.

Therefore, it is possible that Wigan could even lose at Stoke and still survive, assuming that both Blackpool and Birmingham were on the wrong end of heavier defeats in their final games of the campaign.

It is 8/11 in the Premier League odds that Wigan are relegated and they will certainly be targeting victory at Stoke to give themselves the best chance of survival.

However, there are numerous reasons as to why they may be unlikely to get the result they require at Stoke.

Firstly, Stoke are unbeaten in their last eight Premier League games at the Britannia Stadium, winning on six of these occasions.

Furthermore, Wigan have not won any of their last five matches with Stoke, although a brighter note is that they have secured draws in four of these encounters.

Wigan’s odds are 11/8 to beat Stoke, while it is 12/5 that the game ends all square.

The record of Wigan in away games on the final day a season does not inspire much confidence of survival, as they have conceded 13 goals in their last three fixtures on the road.

A £30 stake on Stoke and Wigan drawing 1-1 would return £165. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
