Rome run gives Murray belief heading to French Open
Published:Andy Murray believes he is finally back to his best after a disappointing start to his season.
Murray has failed to hit the heights of previous seasons so far this term, but put in a strong showing to reach the Rome Masters semi-finals last week.
Despite being the latest victim of Novak Djokovic’s fantastic winning streak, Murray is convinced he is finally where he needs to be to mount a serious challenge at Roland Garros.
“I think I should have won that match in three sets. I was disappointed I hadn’t closed out the match because it was the first time I’d ever done that.
“It was a tough one for me to lose so I was disappointed, but it was important for me because I felt I was starting to play good tennis again.
“I was working things out on the court. I had been behind 6-1 and managed to find my way back into it.
“I think if I play my best tennis, I feel like I’ve got a good chance against all of the good players.”
It looks as though Murray will have to beat the best player if he’s to win his first major.
Murray faces qualifiers in the first two rounds but is the same side of the draw as World No.1 Rafa Nadal, meaning they could potentially meet at the semi-final stage.
It will be a tough ask – especially on clay – but if Murray can continue his improvement, then backing him at 16/1 to beat Nadal and claim the title could prove to be a very shrewd bet.
