French Open offers Wozniacki best chance to break Grand Slam duck
Published:World number one Caroline Wozniacki heads into next week’s French Open still searching for her maiden Grand Slam title.
Wozniacki has held the world number one tag since October bar a week in February when Kim Clijsters snatched it for the short period, but Wozniacki is yet to back up her ‘world’s best’ tag with a Grand Slam victory.
The Dane is the 5/1 joint favourite this week alongside Victoria Azarenka and after a strong clay-court season which has seen her lift one title, reach two finals and a semi-final in her four tournaments, the Dane looks in strong form.
With the Williams sisters absent and with Clijsters only just returning from the treatment table, the chances of Wozniacki winning have been talked up and they should be with her main rivals absent or not fully fit.
Wozniacki is in Brussels this week looking to hone her game for Roland Garros next week and is 4/11 to beat Yanina Wickmayer on Thursday.
Clijsters has to be a concern to Wozniacki even if she is playing her first tournament for two months, and the Belgian looks a huge price at 10/1 this week.
The two have never met on clay and Wozniacki is the more comfortable on clay of the two players, and the Dane would be confident of registering her first victory over Clijsters next week.
Azarenka and Maria Sharapova (7/1) also represent huge threats and Azarenka has been the standout player over the past two months.
Sharapova’s victory in Rome last week has alerted her to the attention of many punters who backed the Russian into 7/1 from 20/1, but Wozniacki is the more consistent of the three and represents a strong French Open bet.
