Arsenal to return to chase for Samba in summer

Arsenal could reignite their interest in Blackburn defender Christopher Samba in the summer after Arsene Wenger hinted after the club’s defeat at Stoke that his defence needs strengthening.

The lack of experience in the Arsenal first-team can be considered to have ultimately been the underlying problem in them failing to win any silverware this season, with the average age of the squad just 23.

Arsene Wenger’s team were heavy favourites to win the Carling Cup final with Birmingham, while they have thrown away numerous points over the course of the Premier League season which appear to have cost them the title, including blowing a 4-0 lead at Newcastle.

Arsenal are 7/1 in the Premier League odds to win the title next season and some older signings to mix in with the talented crop of youngsters they already possess could significantly improve their chances.

One of which could be Samba, who is believed to have been very close to signing for Wenger in January.

Samba was frustrated by Blackburn’s decision to surprisingly sack manager Sam Allardyce, but eventually agreed new terms at Ewood Park.

However, Samba has now stated that he is not sure what lies ahead in the future and may still decide to leave Blackburn.

He said: “Everybody knows that I am an ambitious player. I am at an age now where I want to try to do something. You only have one career and it would be a shame to not make the best of it.

“I am happy at Blackburn, but I will study any opportunities that come my way this year. I’m not trying to move away, but of course I would look if it is the right thing for me.”

A £30 stake on Arsenal winning the 2012 Premier League title would return £210. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
