Pathfork and Fury to follow Frankel in the 2000 Guineas
Published:With five wins in five races, two of which took place at Newmarket, it’s no surprise that Frankel is 1/2 to be victorious on Saturday, a price that should see him start as the shortest 2000 Guineas favourite in 40 years.
Encouragement for those planning to back another horse is provided by the fact that a favourite hasn’t triumphed for five years, but there are very few flaws to identify in Frankel, who looks set to provide Henry Cecil with his first winner since 1976.
There is plenty of fun to be had for punters that refuse to back odds-on frontrunners though as Ladbrokes are offering a market on which three-year-old will finish first without Frankel in the running, in which Pathfork is a worthy leader at 2/1.
Like Frankel, Pathfork is yet to taste defeat in three career appearances, all of which were made at the Curragh. Trainer Jessica Harrington had admitted that beating Frankel may prove too tough a test but is pleased with the preparation of her entry.
As far as the each-way betting goes, one of the most intriguing outsiders for the 3.10pm race is another challenger boasting a 100 per cent win rate, 16/1 shot Fury.
The William Haggas-trained contender outperformed 26 other horses to claim the 500,000 Tattersalls Millions Trophy Class 2 event in October at Newmarket and while regular jockey Kieren Fallon is banned, a capable deputy has been chosen in Johnny Murtagh.
The Irish veteran has won the 2000 Guineas twice before, including with Henrythenavigator in 2008, and heads to England on fine form having placed with five of his last seven mounts at Cork and Tipperary this week.
