McIlroy great value at 4/6 to hold on at the Masters
Published:Rory McIlroy heads into the final day of the 75th Masters Tournament with a four-shot advantage over closest challengers Angel Cabrera, Charl Schwartzel, Choi Kyung-Ju and Jason Day, yet can still be backed at 4/6.
Each of the last three golfers to have ended day three with a lead of two shots or greater, and four of the five to have been ahead by such a margin this century, have been able to convert the advantage.
The Northern Irishman, who is bidding to become the first British winner in Augusta since Nick Faldo in 1996, has never won a major before but that’s no huge disadvantage as two of the last four champions broke their major duck in the process.
Even if it was, 2009 victor Cabrera is the only man within six shots of the 21-year-old to have triumphed at one of the big four events.
The Argentine is 12/1 to don the green jacket again, however it’s relatively unheard of for someone to deliver twice in three years, with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson the only repeat winners there over the last 16 years.
Woods has a fighting chance of a first major in three years and the 15th of his career at 16/1. He trails by seven though and has led or tied for first at this point in each of his 14 prior successes, so the 7/4 on him making the top five is more appealing for Tiger fans.
Pre-tournament favourite Mickelson meanwhile is 5/1 to achieve even that having fallen five shots off the pace Cabrera and co are setting. He’s hit the top ten in 11 of the last 12 years however so the 13/8 on him doing so again is hugely tempting.
