Manchester United to rival Spurs for Forlan signature
Diego Forlan could be on his way back to the Premier League this summer after falling out with his Atletico Madrid coach Quique Sanchez Flores, according to reports in The People.
The Uruguayan striker, voted the best player at last year’s World Cup as his nation defied all expectations to reach the semi-finals, has disappointed this season and looks set to fail to reach 15 La Liga goals for the first time in five years.
It had already been rumoured that he would be leaving the Spanish capital club at the end of the campaign and the latest murmurings of a falling out with his boss appear to make that development even more likely.
There will be no shortage of interest in the 31-year-old, who Atletico are believed to value at around the £9 million mark, despite his lack of resale value, with Tottenham and former employers Manchester United both linked.
It has been claimed for a while now that Spurs have been tracking the ex-Villarreal forward, however the suggestion that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to give him a second chance at Old Trafford is a fresh one.
The two Champions League participants are expected to face competition from Turkish side Besiktas, who are alleged to have offered the South American star a mega-money deal in the hope that he will transform their fortunes.
Even if he has had a disagreement with Sanchez Flores though, there is no guarantee that it would lead to a transfer, as many suspect that the tactician will be on his way out of the Vicente Calderon himself this summer.
The Europa League holders continue their fight for a place in next season’s competition without Forlan tonight away to fellow challengers Espanyol in a match that they are 5/4 to win.
A £30 stake on Tottenham aiding their bid to lure Forlan with a top-four finish at 7/4 would provide a £52.50 profit. New customers can sign up here to take advantage of a free football bet worth up to £30.
