Fowler good price to be top debutant in Masters odds

Only once in the last 75 years has a Masters rookie claimed the Green Jacket and Rickie Fowler looks the most likely of the 19 debutants to improve upon this record at Augusta this year.

Fowler is 66/1 in the US Masters golf betting, which may be a big ask given his rookie status, but 4/1 may prove a decent price that he finishes four rounds at Augusta as the top debutant.

Firstly, Fowler is no stranger to the big stage, having played in the US Open twice as an amateur and also representing the US at the Ryder Cup last year, where he showed true grit under immense pressure to halve his singles clash with Edoardo Molinari.

At Augusta perhaps more than any other course, experience and knowledge are particularly important.

Players can run into monumental difficulties if their course management is not up to scratch, with a thorough understanding needed on the right places to miss the fairway and which side of a given green to best land their balls.

Fowler has picked the ideal playing partner to aid his preparation as he has joined three-time Masters victor Phil Mickelson for his practice rounds at Augusta and wisely took the opportunity to pick his brains for some valuable advice.

Martin Laird is also 4/1 in the US Masters odds to finish top debutant and has been backed by Colin Montgomerie to feature towards the head of the leaderboard because the style of his game is well suited to Augusta.

Furthermore, Laird arrives at the first major of the year high on confidence after recently winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational, which was his second career PGA Tour success.

Of the other debutants, Jeff Overton looks slightly overpriced at 14/1 to lead home the rookies, especially if he can quickly come to terms with using a new driver.

A £20 stake on Charley Hoffman finishing the Masters as the top debutant would return £320. New customers can sign up here to take advantage of free bets totalling up to £60.
