Chaotic times at Atletico Madrid will benefit Manchester United
Having reported yesterday that Atletico Madrid manager Quique Sanchez Flores has told club officials he will not be in charge next season, it seems David De Gea, Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan are also set to leave the club.
Atletico’s situation is confusing to say the least and despite reports this morning suggesting David De Gea has been given an ultimatum, president Enrique Cerezo has told Spanish paper Marca that he fully believes De Gea and Aguero will be Atletico players next season.
When asked if Atletico Madrid will play in the Europa League next season Cerezo said: “Yes I do. I am certain, just like I am certain we will play it with De Gea and Aguero and all our current players.”
Except Atletico Madrid have won just five games since the turn of the year as their poor run of form coincides with the fall out between Sanchez Flores and Forlan, and with just four games of the season to go, Atletico will have to work hard to qualify for the Europa League.
Rumours that De Gea is joining Manchester United have been circulating for months and many believe a deal has already been completed as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to replace Edwin van der Sar.
Diego Forlan looks certain to leave with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur interested and should Atletico fail to qualify for the Europa League, it’s hard to see Aguero not being tempted away.
Having dropped two points at St James’ Park on Tuesday night, Manchester United saw their Premier League title odds eased into 1/7 and with work left to do, including games against Arsenal and Chelsea, the race for the Premier League title isn’t over yet.
