Cardiff can mount late Championship title challenge

Published:

Championship odds of 1/14 should make QPR nailed on to top the division but whispers are forming that Cardiff can mount a late assault and steal the title from under their nose.

QPR wasted the chance to place one hand on the title when drawing 0-0 at home to Derby, although they are still eight points clear at the top with just four games remaining.

But with a tough run-in to complete and Cardiff in the middle of a winning run at present, there is a slim chance that QPR can be caught despite leading the standings since November.

The obvious crunch game comes on Saturday when Cardiff look to extend their winning streak to five games when hosting QPR.

Cardiff’s odds are 6/5 to beat QPR and a victory would mount further pressure on Neil Warnock’s side, especially if a decent winning margin is established to tighten the goal difference between the pair.

However, anything other than a Cardiff win would almost certainly mean that QPR can virtually be confirmed as champions.

Cardiff are 9/1 in the Championship betting to be crowned champions and on paper they have the easier games remaining of the two teams, with Preston away the biggest potential banana skin left.

The other fixtures are with Middlesbrough and Burnley, who by the time they meet Cardiff are expected to have little to play for.

If Cardiff do win their four remaining games, QPR realistically need four points from their outstanding fixtures to take the title.

Aside from Cardiff, they host a Hull side that are unbeaten in 16 away games, they travel to Watford who feature the league’s top scorer in Danny Graham and finish at Loftus Road against Leeds, who are likely to need a result to gain a play-off place.

A £30 stake on Cardiff winning the Championship title would return £270. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
