2000 Guineas favourite Frankel to be allowed to front run
Published:Literally the only conceivable problem that may prevent Frankel from winning the 2000 Guineas is his inability to settle in races and trainer Henry Cecil has stated that he is considering allowing his horse to make all of the running at Newmarket.
Tom Queally has had much difficulty settling Frankel into his races and has had to take quite a pull to prevent the horse getting ahead of himself, which could prove a bigger problem over an extended trip of 1m.
This happened noticeably in the Greenham Stakes on his latest start and on that occasion Queally allowed the horse to hit the front sooner than had been the case during his four victories as a two-year-old.
Cecil has noticed this situation in Frankel’s races and is considering whether to employ different tactics in the 2000 Guineas in a bid to prevent the horse using up too much of his stamina, especially if the early pace is slow.
The trainer said: We’ll see how things pan out, but he could make the running if he had to – hopefully he won’t have to. I’d like a decent, sensible pace. If the pace was wrong you wouldn’t fight him.
“He has a very long stride, an extraordinary stride, and when you take a pull you take him out of his stride. On the other hand, if you let him go and allow him to use himself he relaxes.”
Frankel is 1/2 in the 2000 Guineas odds and seems virtually certain to hand Cecil a third career win in the Classic and a first since Wollow in 1976.
He is already a Group One winner and seems to be well ahead of his rivals in terms of ratings, which would mean one would need to step up remarkably on their two-year-old form to lay down any sort of challenge.
