Wilshere or Lampard is the chief Capello conundrum

Frank Lampard’s struggles for Chelsea for much of this season mean that he is danger of being dropped for England’s hugely important Euro 2012 qualifying clash with Wales.

Defeat for England would leave them in a troubled spot in Group G, putting even greater pressure on their showdown in Montenegro in October.

With news that Wales’ star player Gareth Bale is reportedly out of the game with a hamstring pull, Fabio Capello’s chances of victory would significantly improve, with England’s odds 4/9 to win at Wembley.

However, Capello is still considering making some changes to the heart of his midfield, with working out the best way of incorporating Jack Wilshere proving the biggest challenge.

Wilshere was picked alongside Lampard for the friendly win in Denmark, but did not seem overly at home in a defensive role.

Therefore, Capello is considering moving the Arsenal youngster into a more advanced role and then picking either Gareth Barry or Scott Parker in the enforcer position.

This would mean there is no spot for Lampard and based on the form he has displayed in the current season, it could be argued that he deserves to be dropped.

After being one of England’s stand-out stars for much of the last decade, Lampard has not played particularly well for some time.

Although he does seem to have regained the scoring touch for Chelsea of late, netting three goals in their last three Premier League games.

The main problem for Lampard is that he is not his most effective in a standard 442 formation and seems to carry a far greater goal threat when one of three central midfielders at Chelsea, when he can make some trademark late runs into the penalty box of the opposition.
