Stosur will have to create history if she is to defy Sharapova

The Sony Ericsson Open enters the quarter-final stage in the women’s draw today and the standout match for both quality and betting value is Maria Sharapova’s tie with Sam Stosur.

While the betting suggests it should be a tight match-up – Sharapova is 4/6 to win while Stosur is available at 11/10 – the form guide suggests the Russian should steam role her way past the Australian.

Sharapova has never lost to Stosur in six attempts and on only two of those occasions has been taken the distance.

The 4/6 for Sharapova to set-up a quarter-final with either Shuai Peng or Alexandra Dulgheru looks incredible value and the 7/4 for the Russian to win 2-0 looks the pick of today’s Sony Ericsson betting.

Caroline Wozniacki vs Andrea Petkovic

Wozniacki may be the hot favourite to beat Petkovic and the favourite to land the title this week, but the German is an unknown quantity to Wozniacki and there seems no value in backing the Dane at 1/7.

Petkovic has been in solid form since making an appearance in the Australian Open quarter-final and is yet to drop a set this week and 4/1 is a tempting price for the German to upset the world number one.

A tight match should be expected and backing either Wozniacki to win 2-1 at 7/2 or Petkovic at 7/1 to win 2-1 would return a tidy profit.

Jelena Jankovic vs Anabel Medina Garrigues

Jankovic may have finished 2010 poorly but her start to 2011 has been sublime reaching two semi-finals and a final in her last three tournaments and 2/9 for the Serb to win seems the right price.

Medina Garrigues has enjoyed a resurgence as of late but has only beaten Jankovic once in six starts and at 3/1, the Sony Ericsson betting suggests the Spaniard has little chance of upsetting the Serb.

A £20 stake on Sharapova beating Stosur 2-1 would return £55. New customers can sign up here to get £60 in free bets.
