Premier League title still out of the reach of Chelsea

Chelsea’s betting odds to win the Premier League have shortened into 12/1 following their victory over Manchester United, but manager Carlo Ancelotti is still standing by his belief that they have too many points to make up.

Frank Lampard’s late winner from the penalty spot at Stamford Bridge reduced Chelsea’s deficit to 12 points on Manchester United.

Meanwhile, there are grounds for optimism as Chelsea still have to face Manchester United in the Premier League again, while they also have a game in hand to further close their gap.

Not since Arsenal in the 1997/98 Premier League season has a team made up significant ground in the final two months of the campaign to win the title.

In that season Arsenal were 12 points down heading into March, but were largely helped by the fact that they had three games in hand.

And Ancelotti feels that regardless of how many points Chelsea collect over the remainder of the season, it is the lack of points that Manchester United are likely to drop that will rule them out of the title race.

Ancelotti said: “We are too far from Manchester United. It’s difficult for them to lose points in the next few games.

“I cannot believe we are this far behind, but we have to be honest. This is where we are in the table, and United have played with more consistency than us.”

Another factor in Manchester United’s favour is that in the last seven Premier League seasons, only one team that topped the table at the start of March failed to be crowned champions, which was when Arsenal were pegged back in 2008.

Manchester United’s betting odds are now 4/7 to win the Premier League and they are 6/4 to return to winning ways in their next fixture away at Liverpool.
