Oscars Well gives Power chance of first Festival winner
Published:Robbie Power has already experienced the ultimate high in horse racing when riding Silver Birch to victory in the 2007 Grand National, now he is hoping that the time has come to taste success at the Cheltenham Festival.
Power has come close to victory on two occasions in the past at the Cheltenham Festival, finishing second in the RSA Chase on board Horner Woods and the same riding Prince Erik in the Pertemps Final 12 months ago.
He may be optimistic that his duck will be broken this year as he has at least two decent chances of claiming a victory, with Oscars Well perhaps being his best booking.
Oscars Well is the favourite at 7/2 in the Cheltenham betting for the Neptune Novices’ Hurdle and heads to the Festival on the back of three straight victories.
His victory in the Deloitte Hurdle is arguably the best form of all the contenders in the race and he has to have a major chance, particularly if the ground at Cheltenham is on the soft side.
Power said: “We won’t be using ground as an excuse either way at Cheltenham. He is definitely the best novice hurdler I’ve ridden.
“I don’t think anything will be as good as the Grand National but I would love to have a Cheltenham winner on my CV. It is definitely the best collection of rides I’ve had going there so I’m hopeful.”
Power will also think that Bostons Angel is a leading contender in the RSA Chase and he is priced at 16/1 in the Cheltenham betting, although he will have to step up on his previous form to beat Time For Rupert.
There is also the obvious likelihood that Power will pick up some spare rides at the Cheltenham Festival, some of which may have decent each-way credentials.
