Midnight Chase has jumping practice for Gold Cup
Published:Neil Mulholland has decided to incorporate some showjumping into the training regime of Midnight Chase in order to boost the horse’s chances of winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Midnight Chase is currently 14/1 in the Cheltenham Gold Cup betting and can widely be seen as a lively outside contender to pose a threat to those at the head of the market.
The nine-year-old has shown his love for the undulations of Cheltenham with victories on each of his last four visits, which includes on all three starts during the current season.
Midnight Chase has not been seen on a racecourse since the most recent of these victories in a listed race in December, but Mulholland has done his best to ensure his horse remains interested and on the top of his game.
Mulholland said: “He’s a real good showjumper. He jumps doubles, it’s something a bit different but he really enjoys it. He’s a happy horse.
“I try to keep Dougie Costello on board him as he’s the one who’s going to be riding him down to a fence and everybody rides different.”
Midnight Chase’s Cheltenham Gold Cup chances will largely depend on whether he is allowed to dictate the pace and bound along in front.
If he is unchallenged for the lead then he may have serious each-way credentials, but with the likes of Denman and Neptune Collonges also happy to take on front-running duties, Midnight Chase may find that he is pestered more for the lead than he would hope.
Denman has won a Cheltenham Gold Cup in the past by leading all the way from the front and is 6/1 to triumph again, with Neptune Collonges’ betting odds 33/1 to land the spoils.
