Gainey to cause upset at Transitions Championship
Published:Although last week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship winner Nick Watney and current world-ranked number one Martin Kaymer are in the field, it may prove profitable to take a punt on an outsider securing victory in the Transitions Championship.
Watney and Kaymer are both 10/1 in the golf betting to win the PGA Tour event, with the former being particularly high on confidence following his recent success at Doral.
However, back-to-back victories are always a tough ask, even for a player that is yet to finish outside of the top ten in his five PGA Tour starts this season.
Meanwhile, Kaymer fell away with a disappointing closing two rounds at Doral and he may be worth just watching to see how he recovers from this setback.
Last year’s winner Jim Furyk is another in the field, but taking a chance on Tommy Gainey securing a maiden PGA Tour victory may be worth considering at far longer golf odds, given the strength of his start to the season.
Gainey is 80/1 in the Transitions Championship betting and has improved remarkably in recent seasons, winning twice on the Nationwide Tour in 2010.
He has also already claimed two top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour this year, which have also occurred on arguably two of the hardest courses that have been tackled so far.
Gainey finished in a share of eighth spot in the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the tough TPC Scottsdale, but this result was easily improved at the Honda Classic.
The 35-year-old dropped shots on just six holes at PGA National, despite an average display in finding the greens in regulation and in the number of putts he took per round.
Any small improvement in these areas will surely see him go close on another challenging layout – the Copperhead course at the Innisbrook Resort.
However, it may be a negative that he has never played at the venue before.
