Chelsea ponder Drogba swap to land Real Madrid’s Kaka
Published:Chelsea are weighing up whether to take advantage of the troubled time currently being experienced by Kaka at Real Madrid by offering a swap deal for Didier Drogba.
Kaka is struggling to reproduce his best form this season after returning to first-team action following a lengthy knee injury and is behind the likes of Mesut Ozil and Angel Di Maria in his battle for starting opportunities.
Reports suggest that Real Madrid will be happy to cash in on Kaka in the summer, although they would come nowhere close to recouping the £55m they paid AC Milan for the Brazilian in 2009.
However, selling the 28-year-old may prove easier said than done as not only will a club have to stump up a big transfer fee, but also meet Kaka’s high wage demands.
Former club AC Milan have already shown an interest in re-establishing their relationship with Kaka, but with Chelsea potentially looking to substantially overhaul their squad in the summer, London may be the most likely destination.
The arrival of Fernando Torres at Stamford Bridge in January has resulted in Drogba spending more time on the bench and the club seem keen on utilising the striker in a part-exchange deal.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has already invested heavily this season on Torres and David Luiz, but may continue this spending spree in the summer in order to boost Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League during the next campaign.
A number of high-profile signings have already been linked with a move to Chelsea in the close season, including Udinese’s Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez, Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik, Dortmund defender Neven Subotic and AC Milan striker Alexandre Pato.
Chelsea are still not out of this season’s Premier League title race and are 7/1 to overhaul their nine-point deficit on Manchester United.
But their best chance of a trophy may lie in the Champions League, with Chelsea’s betting odds being 11/2 to win the tournament for the first time in their history.
