Big money to be made in Premier League relegation battle

Things couldn’t be much tighter at the foot of the Premier League.

Just when a team looks like being cut adrift at the bottom – as Wigan have been for the past few weeks – they produce a win to keep them very much in the race for survival.

Wigan remain favourites for the drop at 4/11 despite their 2-1 win over Carling Cup winners Birmingham City on Saturday. The Blues’ season definitely peaked with that Wembley triumph and they still have a huge battle on their hands to stay in the Premier League.

They are currently second from bottom following West Ham’s goalless draw away to Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves’ win at Aston Villa. Alex McLeish’s men are priced at 5/4 to be relegated.

Wolves’ win means there is now just three points between them and Fulham in 12th, meaning most of the bottom half of the table will be looking anxiously over their shoulders.

Four teams – Blackburn, Aston Villa, Blackpool and West Bromwich Albion – are stuck on 33 points, just one above Wolves, West Ham and the final relegation spot.

There is definitely a case to be made for Blackpool getting relegated this term. After a blistering start to the season, they’ve now won just two games in 2011 and ‘boast’ the worst home record in the division. They’re 1/1 to make the drop straight back to the Championship.

If you’re looking for some slightly longer odds, Blackburn – who have also won just twice this calendar year and need to play Manchester United and City at home yet – could also be worth a bet at 9/4.

A £20 stake on Fulham to get relegated would return £120. New customers can sign up here to take advantage of free bets totaling up to £60.
