Pardew concedes his side are in relegation fight after losing Carroll
Published:It may have been the best bit of business on Tyneside since Newcastle Brown Ale was sold to the Dutch and Danes, but Andy Carroll’s departure leaves Newcastle football club in a precarious position.
Carroll and Kevin Nolan have been Newcastle’s main source of goals this season, scoring 21 of Newcastle’s 36 league goals, and Carroll’s loss leaves Alan Pardew with a huge void to fill.
Having been unable to reinvest any of the £35m received for their star striker, Newcastle need either Shola Ameobi or Leon Best to step up to the plate and with question marks surrounding their goal-scoring ability – Newcastle are a very tempting price at 10/1 to be relegated.
Currently seven points clear of the relegation zone, Newcastle face a huge tie with Fulham at Craven Cottage tonight and should Fulham win – they are 1/1 to do so – they will end the day just a point behind Newcastle.
In comparison with Fulham’s relegation odds of 11/2, Newcastle are a massive price at 10/1 to go down and that will shorten should they lose tonight.
“I can’t say the window for us has been a success, can I?” said Pardew. “We have lost Andy Carroll.”
Pardew also went on to admit Newcastle were “vulnerable” in a press conference on Tuesday and that the mood in the Newcastle changing room is “disillusioned”.
Wigan (4/9), West Ham (4/7) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (8/13) are all odds-on for relegation but Newcastle need to pick up points soon.
The next few games, starting tonight at Fulham, are crucial for Newcastle as their final six games include a home tie with Manchester United and away trips to Liverpool and Chelsea.
But Alan Pardew’s side play three away games in the next fortnight – separated by a home game with Arsenal – and Pardew has a tough job steering his side away from the relegation zone.
