Hughton betting favourite to take over at West Brom

Chris Hughton is the 5/4 favourite to be the next manager of West Brom after the club decided that the time was right to sack Roberto Di Matteo.

A run of three victories and 13 defeats in their last 18 games has seen West Brom freefall down the Premier League standings to within two points of the relegation zone.

This sequence of results has left West Brom sitting in 16th in the table, which is in stark contrast to earlier in the campaign when a bright start saw them soaring as high as fourth at one point.

Chairman Jeremy Peace said: “Our poor sequence of results stretches back more than three months and there has been little sign of it coming to an end.

“If this run continues much longer, achieving our goal of retaining our Premier League status will become increasingly difficult. That is why we felt compelled to act now.”

West Brom’s survival hopes could be largely dependent on the manager they manage to bring in, with a number of options potentially open to them.

Hughton heads the betting market and was performing amicably it seemed at Newcastle earlier in the season when he was then seemingly unfairly given his marching orders.

Below him are the usual suspects when a managerial vacancy becomes available, with Martin O’Neill 6/1, Alan Curbishley 7/1 and Roy Hodgson 14/1.

Some of the more interesting candidates include first-team coach Michael Appleton at 6/1, who will take over on a temporary basis until an appointment is made.

Meanwhile, St Johnstone boss Derek McInnes is a 4/1 chance and has ties with the club having spent three years on the playing staff until 2003.

A £25 stake on Sean O’Driscoll becoming the next West Brom manager would return £125. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
