Capello faces striker conundrum for Wales clash
Published:Fabio Capello has admitted that he potentially faces a selection headache when it comes to selecting his strikers for England’s next Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales.
England are currently 2/9 in the Euro 2012 betting to qualify for the tournament as winners of Group G, but they are currently three points adrift of Montenegro.
This puts some added importance on England’s next qualifier in Wales, where the three points could prove critical in their pursuit of the group’s surprise leaders.
One decision that could have a major say on the result at the Millennium Stadium would be who Capello picks in attack, with numerous candidates potentially in the running.
Darren Bent and Ashley Young did their chances of starting against Wales the world of good with the two goals in England’s friendly victory in Denmark.
However, Andy Carroll and Peter Crouch could also feature after injury ruled them out of the trip to Denmark, while Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe are others expected to be in contention.
Although it is unlikely that Rooney will be dropped if fit, Capello has indicated that club form could be critical when it comes to making his selection for the Wales clash.
He said: “There’s big competition because all the players could play. It won’t be easy for me to choose. All those players who featured here are in good form. I hope that’s still the case when it comes to the games in March and against Switzerland [in June].
“I have to decide which ones play depending on what form they’re in.”
Should England be successful in qualifying for Euro 2012, then they are the 8/1 fourth favourites to win the competition, behind Spain, Germany and Holland.
