Brighton confirm favourite status with Hartlepool win

Brighton boss Gus Poyet heaped praise on his side for their brilliant 4-1 win against Hartlepool yesterday – a win that puts them three points clear at the top of the league with two games in hand over second placed Bournemouth.

Glenn Murray bagged a brace after Chris Wood opened the scoring for Brighton. The points were made safe thanks to a Craig Noone strike which stretched Brighton’s unbeaten run to four games and makes their status as 1/1 favourites for the League One title look more than justified and certainly like a bet well worth taking on

Poyet told BBC Sussex: “It’s nice when you play well, create chances and score goals. From my point of view the game should have been over by half time. I’m more pleased with the first twenty minutes of the second half when we went and finished the game.”

Bournemouth – the last side to beat Brighton in the league – kept up the heat on their south coast rivals thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Walsall.

The Cherries’ Michael Symes bagged the only goal of the game and stretched their own unbeaten run to six games. Despite their excellent run, Lee Bradbury’s side are still a huge 10/1 to win the title with Huddersfield and Southampton breathing down their neck.

The Saints are currently second in the betting at 7/4 after their own 1-0 victory against Carlisle. Despite the victory, boss Nigel Adkins is demanding more from his players.

He said: “The positive is that we got three points but I expect us to play in a certain manner and we didn’t.For whatever reason we didn’t seem to have a spark.”

Finally, third placed Huddersfield made it eight games without defeat thanks to a battling goalless draw against Oldham. The Terriers can be backed at 9/1 to win the league but, with Brighton in such excellent form, backing the Seagulls to finish the season on top of the table looks like the most tempting bet.
