Late Wycombe collapse sees Chesterfield open up five-point lead

The final 20 minutes proved critical in both of the division’s biggest matches as Chesterfield survived a late fightback by Southend to hold on for a deserved 3-2 victory at Roots Hall while joint-second Wycombe conceding three times to fall to defeat at Crewe to end a run of four straight triumphs.
It was a costly setback for the Chairboys, who are out to 6/1 to finish first after squandering momentum ahead of a critical few weeks during which they host both Rotherham and Port Vale, while leaders Chesterfield assume the mantle of 2/1 favourites.
Two teams looking to belatedly fight for the top spots are Gillingham (20/1) and Oxford (50/1), who were both struggling at the bottom but with five wins in six apiece – the latest 5-1 at Stockport and 2-1 at Aldershot respectively – are showing that the transformation from relegation battlers to promotion contenders can be swift.
Another side that had recently climbed up the table, Bradford, suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss at home to Barnet – the last of the 92 clubs in the top four tiers to record an away win this season – to fall fifteen points off the title pace.
