Gabriel Milito set for Barcelona exit after Pep talks

| 04.01.2011

Barcelona Pep Guardiola admits he has lost his fight to keep Argentinean defender Gabriel Milito at the Nou Camp.

The 30-year-old central defender has failed to feature regularly for the Spanish champions since returning from a cruciate ligament injury almost a year ago to the day.

With Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique going nowhere in the heart of the Barcelona defence, Milito has decided enough is enough and has asked Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta for the chance to move on.

Guardiola said: “There are decisions that I make or the club makes but this one is exclusively his.

“Knowing him, I understand his wish to leave, but I am not upset. It’s impossible to be upset with Gaby.

“Believe me, I have been a soccer player and I put myself in his shoes and I understand it.”

Milito is thought to want to leave so he can hold down his place in the Argentina national side after making his first appearance in over three years against Spain in September.

Milito’s career has been blighted by injuries in recent years, with his cruciate problems being followed by a recurring thigh problem.
