Chelsea linked with shock bid for Championship-based England man

The transfer window is open again and already two rather shocking rumours have hit the newspapers with Chelsea linked with a striker at a Welsh Championship club and a former Blues forward alleged to be on his way to the Championship’s other Welsh representatives.

The Mail on Sunday report that the champions are lining up a bid for the second tier’s joint-top goalscorer, Jay Bothroyd, as they attempt to strengthen an attack that has scored ten goals fewer in their first 19 games than they had at the halfway point in their title-winning 2009-10 campaign.

The Cardiff front man, who made his England debut off the bench against France, is thought to be a target for several Premier League clubs who hope that Dave Jones will cash in now rather than risk losing his chief goal-getter for nothing when his contract expires in the summer.

West Ham, Birmingham and Fulham are all supposed suitors for the former Arsenal trainee but they of course share the common bond of being relegation battlers and it appears far more likely that he would join one of those rather than a team priced at 7/2 to finish first.

The other story mentioned in the intro comes from the same source, with the Mail claiming that Eidur Gudjohnsen – once of Stamford Bridge – will end his brief and miserable spell at Stoke by making a winter move to Championship promotion hopefuls Swansea.

The 32-year-old Icelander has found it harder to get a game than he did at even Barcelona and Tottenham in recent years and has yet to make a single start for the Potters, while he’s failed to make much of an impression in any of his five appearances as a substitute.

The second-placed Swans are 10/1 to win the league despite being just four points behind QPR. A £10 stake on them overhauling the Hoops would provide a profit of £100. New customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
