Chelsea chase Subotic to tighten up leaky and depleted defence

Chelsea’s lack of defensive options could mean that they make an offer to attempt to prize Neven Subotic away from Borussia Dortmund before the end of the transfer window.

Carlo Ancelotti was forced to turn to young Dutchman Jeffrey Bruma to partner John Terry for the 3-3 draw at home to Aston Villa, with Branislav Ivanovic suspended and Alex out injured.

This result has left Chelsea outside of the top four in the standings and six points adrift of leaders Manchester United, despite having played a game more than Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.

Some defensive reinforcements could go some way towards reinvigorating their title aspirations, with Chelsea’s betting odds currently 5/1 to win the Premier League this season.

Subotic has been one of the chief names linked with a move to Stamford Bridge after impressing over the first half of the Bundesliga season at Borussia Dortmund.

The 22-year-old Serbian has built up a formidable partnership with Max Hummels at the heart of the Dortmund defence this season, with the club ten points clear at the head of the standings after 17 fixtures.

One of the primary reasons for this impressive start has been the fact that they have only conceded ten goals in these games, which has meant that they have only tasted defeat twice.

Subotic has all of the characteristics to prove a hit at Chelsea, as not only is he young, he is dominant in the air, decent with the ball at his feet and a good reader of the game.

One win in eight league games is not title-winning form and Chelsea will be keen to begin to turn things around when heading to Wolves next, where they are 1/2 in the Premier League betting odds to leave with the three points.
