Arsenal weigh up defensive signing as added cover for Vermaelen

Arsene Wenger is waiting to hear the latest update on Thomas Vermaelen’s Achilles injury before deciding whether to delve into the transfer market in the January window to boost his chances of winning the Premier League.

Arsenal’s betting odds are currently 7/2 to take the Premier League title, but they do find themselves third in the standings at present, five points adrift of pacesetters Manchester United.

Wenger is happy that he has enough suitable options in midfield and attack to mount a significant title challenge, but knows that strengthening his squad depth in defence may be a wise move.

Vermaelen has not featured for Arsenal since playing in the 2-1 victory at Blackburn at the end of August and despite the summer acquisition of Sebastien Squillaci, Wenger may still find himself short of central defensive options should any other injuries impact his squad.

Johan Djourou is managing to string together a steady run of games after seemingly overcoming his long-term injury woes, while Laurent Koscielny is still adjusting to the rough and tumble of Premier League football after arriving from Lorient in pre-season.

And it could be any two of these three that again take to the field against Manchester City next, as Wenger has been keen to rotate the trio.

When asked about any transfer window signings, Wenger replied: “Midfield and up front, no, but at the back it just depends on Thomas Vermaelen.

“I am just waiting to know more about him and then at the end of January will have to make a decision.”

Ajax’ Jan Vertonghen and Per Mertesacker of Werder Bremen are among the defenders to have been most recently linked with a move to the Emirates.

Arsenal are 5/6 to beat Manchester City in the Premier League betting odds and potentially win three home games in succession in the top flight for the first time this season.
