West Ham boss Avram asks for £10m grant to beat the drop

West Ham United boss Avram Grant has pleaded with the club’s owners to splash the cash to help the Irons avoid relegation.

The east London side slumped to their third defeat in four games against Manchester City on Saturday and are now five points adrift of safety at the foot of the Premier League.

Despite the Irons being favourites for the drop at 4/9, Grant is convinced his side can stay in the English top-flight – as long as some serious cash is invested.

“We certainly need additional players, dangerous players,’ said Grant.

“Even if everyone is fit we still want to be strong in every position. If the owners gave me £10 million, that would be great.

“We are five points from safety and that is not a lot when you still have more than half of the season still to play.”

Grant hasn’t exactly been frugal since taking over at West Ham, spending £8 million on the likes of Frederic Piquionne and Pablo Barrera in the summer.

With those players hardly setting the world on fire, whether Grant gets the cash to spend this January is an entirely different matter.

West Ham have won just once in the league since August, but do have a Carling Cup semi-final against Birmingham City to keep up their spirits and are 5/1 to win that competition.

A £10 bet on West Ham to win the Carling Cup pays out £50. New customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
