West Ham are two players away from staying up says Cole

Carlton Cole has urged his manager Avram Grant to make some quality signings in the January transfer window or West Ham run the risk of relegation.

West Ham currently sit bottom of the Premier League following Saturday’s defeat to Sunderland, and Grant’s side are now the 4/7 favourites to go down, ahead of Wolverhampton Wanderers (8/13), Wigan (4/6) and Blackpool (1/1).

Victor Obinna and Frederique Piquionne were brought in at the start of the season and the form of those two players has seen Cole lose his starting spot, but Cole still believes West Ham need more players if they are to survive the drop.

“Do we need to buy more players? Yes, that’s what we need to do now,” said Cole.

“We have a great team and we need to build on it with more great players.”

With just 12 points from 16 games, West Ham could be the team that are bottom of the Premier League come Christmas and only West Bromwich Albion have survived relegation having spent Christmas Day rooted to the foot of the Premier League.

Currently level on points with Wolves, West Ham would need to take more points from their next two games before Christmas to avoid being bottom.

But while Wolves face a winnable game at home to Birmingham before an away trip to West Brom, West Ham play Manchester City at home before travelling to Blackburn.

Historically December has proved a crucial month in shaping the rest of the Premier League season, and West Ham face a trip to Fulham and a home game with Everton before the turn of the year.

Avram Grant will be targeting six points from his next four games but realistically West Ham fans will be happy with four.
