Tough upcoming games makes Newcastle big at 9/2 to go down
It is more than plausible that Newcastle could still be on 19 points after their next four Premier League games and therefore they could be worth backing at 9/2 to be relegated to the Championship this season.
Newcastle’s defeat at fellow Premier League new boys West Brom has left them four points above the relegation places, but there is every chance this will change in the run up to Christmas.
Their next four games sees them play Liverpool and Manchester City at home, while they face uninspiring away trips to Birmingham and Tottenham.
First-choice central defensive duo Mike Williamson and Fabricio Coloccini are both sidelined and will serve the last of their three-game bans against Liverpool.
Newcastle’s recent record against Liverpool is not the best as they have lost their last four meetings, conceding 14 goals in the process and scoring just once.
Furthermore, Steven Gerrard seems to have a particular liking for scoring against Newcastle as he has four goals in as many games.
Newcastle’s record in their other upcoming games is not much better.
They have won just one of their last five games with Birmingham, they are on an eight-game winless streak against Manchester City and lost their last three against Tottenham.
Newcastle need goals from more sources if they are to improve upon these disappointing records, as Andy Carroll and Kevin Nolan have been responsible for two-thirds of their league goals this season.
Carroll already has nine goals this season and had scored all of Newcastle’s last four Premier League goals until Peter Lovenkrands grabbed a last-ditch consolation in the defeat to West Brom.
On a positive note is that they have found the target in 11 of their last 12 Premier League encounters.
