Thornton determined to bounce back from England rout

| 03.12.2010

Scotland’s Robert Thornton admits their comprehensive 5-0 defeat in the Jocky Wilson Cup earlier this year still hurts him and his partner Gary Anderson – but he’s determined to make up for it at this weekend’s Cash Converters World Cup of Darts.

Thornton and Anderson are fourth favourites for the competition at 9/1 and face the winners of this afternoon’s clash between Russian pair Anastasia Dobromyslova and Roman Konchikov and Gibraltar’s Dylan Duo and Dyson Parody in their first round game.

Speaking to the PDC, Thornton said: “To represent your country in anything is one of the best things you can do and I’m really proud.

“I was fortunate enough to do it last year in the Jocky Wilson Cup against England and I get to do it again this year, and it’s a brilliant honour.

“If Gary and I had hit our doubles in the Jocky Wilson Cup it could have been a different story but Phil Taylor and James Wade were just too good for us.

“It was a bit of a disaster in the end to lose 5-0 but hopefully we can do better this time and maybe even win the World Cup. We know how each other players – we can both score heavily and as long as we hit our doubles we stand a good chance.”

Scotland will not have an easy opening game though, whoever they face. Russia and Gibraltar are both at 5/6 to win their first round match and it promises to be every bit as close as the odds suggest.

However, with Dyson Duo enjoying a solid season that has seen him climb to 77th in the world rankings, backing the Gibraltar team to come out on top could certainly be worth a bet.
