Swann a huge price at 14/1 to be the Sports Personality of the Year

The betting market may suggest it’s a two horse race for BBC’s Sport’s Personality of the Year award, but one England cricketer will make a late surge for the annual award.

As England continue to punish an ageing Australian side Down Under, one man stands out above the rest and Graeme Swann is included in the shortlist for the BBC’s award which is decided on the 19th December.

Swann is currently a 14/1 shot to win the award but having taken a five-wicket haul in England’s second Test victory, and with one more Test match before the awards ceremony, Swann is definitely capable of upsetting the two favourites.

After winning his first Grand National, AP McCoy is currently the 1/1 favourite with 12 days until the winner is announced, and in close attendance is Graeme McDowell who upset Tiger Woods at the weekend to register his fourth tournament win of the season.

The competition for Swann is strong, McCoy won his 15th consecutive Champion jockey title last season to go along with his Grand National win and many believe his consistent success over the years merits the award.

McDowell is the US Open champion and became the face of Europe’s winning Ryder Cup team when sealing the final point for victory, and like Swann, he also carries off a cheeky chappie personality.

Two cricketers, Ian Botham and Andrew Flintoff have won the award on the back of Ashes performances, but both of these were summer campaigns and the fact that we will be in the middle of the Ashes when the award is announced may see Swann suffer.

But with it being a public vote, if Swann produces something special in the third Test then he will be in the forefront of people’s minds.

With Ladbrokes offering 1/5 odds for a top three finish, punters can get 9/5 that Swann finishes in the top three.

A £10 each way stake on Swann making the top three would return £28. New customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
