Rampant Barcelona unstoppable in quest for La Liga title

There are always debates about which team deserves recognition as being the best of all time, but it is hard to make a case against the current Barcelona side that has potency in attack and are almost watertight in defence.

Despite the managerial strengths of Jose Mourinho and the amount of talent in his Real Madrid squad, it already seems a foregone conclusion that Barcelona will win a third straight La Liga title.

Barcelona’s betting odds of 4/7 suggest this and even though they are only two points clear of Real Madrid in the table, it seems almost incomprehensible that they will drop any more points this season.

Pep Guardiola’s team have scored 112 goals in their 38 La Liga games in 2010, while 51 have arrived in their 16 outings this season.

Furthermore, the 5-1 demolition of Espanyol, who until the defeat had maintained a 100 per cent winning record at home this season, was their tenth win on the bounce and extended their record to eight wins from eight away games during the campaign.

In attack, Lionel Messi has scored 17 goals in his last 13 league games, alongside racking up 11 assists, while he also boasts the phenomenal record of 58 goals in his last 53 Barcelona appearances.

His strike partners David Villa and Pedro are also on fire, with Villa striking nine goals in his last seven league appearances and Pedro on the other flank chipping in with six in seven games.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the pitch, Espanyol’s consolation was the first goal Barcelona had conceded in over seven matches.

It is hard not to feel sorry for Levante, who travel to Barcelona in the next round of La Liga fixtures.

On their last visit to the Nou Camp, Levante left with a 5-1 defeat and more of the same may be on the cards on January 3rd.
