Martinez convinced Wigan can survive despite Moses injury
Published:Roberto Martinez has called for his players to pull together for their huge game against Stoke at the weekend – despite Victor Moses being out for a lengthy period with a dislocated shoulder.
The 4/6 relegation favourites crashed out of the Carling Cup 2-0 against Arsenal last night thanks to an Antolin Alcaraz own goal and a Nicklas Bendtner strike.
However, while Martinez was disappointed by his side’s Carling Cup exit, it was the injury to Moses that will be the biggest blow to the Spaniard.
He said: “”Victor fell very awkwardly and straightaway you could see that he had dislocated his shoulder. Unfortunately we are looking at anything between four to six weeks, and that’s a shame because he looked very sharp against Arsenal.
“Any team missing two or three players would drop their level a little, but we are a very committed squad.
“During the season a club has very tough periods in terms of lack of numbers, suspensions or injuries, and this is one of them. It is no good feeling sorry for ourselves.
“We have to prepare for a massive game on Saturday against Stoke and look for consistency in our league form.”
Wigan are now favourites for the drop at 4/6 after a poor run that has seen them record just one victory in their last eight Premier League games.
They are 6/4 to beat Stoke at the DW Stadium on Saturday but with the Potters winning three of their last four, Martinez may have to wait a bit longer to get ease Wigan’s relegation worries.
