Chesterfield lose attacking stars for crucial match against Bury

Following three defeats in their last four games, Chesterfield have hit a sticky patch on their ascent to the top of League Two and automatic promotion.

Currently 4/1 to win League Two, second favourites behind Port Vale who are 11/4, Chesterfield need to turn around their season quickly if they are to maintain their title challenge.

But the Spireites have suffered a huge blow with the losses of top scorer Craig Davies and his team mate Dean Morgan.

The loss of Morgan, who has one goal to his name from nine starts this season, isn’t a big loss to Chesterfield who have seen veteran striker Jack Lester cement his place in the side with four goals from his 17 starts.

But Davies’ withdrawal will have a massive impact on John Sheridan as he prepares his squad to face third-placed Bury at Gigg Lane on Saturday for a game his side are 21/10 to win.

Davies has 12 goals in 16 games this season and is challenging Rotherham’s Adam Le Fondre for the title of League Two’s top goalscorer.

His goals for Chesterfield have been crucial in securing their place at the top of the table as Sherdian’s men have the best attack in League Two with 38 goals, but the defence has conceded 23 goals in their 18 league games this season.

Bury have only one win in their last five home games but will be buoyed by the fact that they don’t have to face one of the division’s most lethal strikers, and at 5/4, Alan Knill’s side offer plenty of value.

A win for Bury would send them above Chesterfield in League Two and the Shakers could go top depending on Port Vale’s result with Stevenage.

Chesterfield know they need to get back on track quickly or they could find the teams around them leapfrogging them over the Christmas period.
