Spurs starting to believe they are Premier League challengers

Tottenham Hotspur’s fightback against Liverpool last Saturday may well be the catalyst that inspires Spurs into challenging for the Premier League.

At 33/1 to win the Premier League, Spurs find themselves behind Chelsea (11/8), Manchester United (15/8), Arsenal (9/2) and Manchester City (9/1).

But having beaten Arsenal and Liverpool, and drawn with Manchester City, Sebastien Bassong and Luka Modric both believe Spurs can seriously challenge for the title.

“I believe we can win it – but I don’t know if the players do,” said Bassong.

But Modric echoed his team-mate and said: “We are very good, especially at home.”

“A little bit, we are struggling away but if we can improve that part of our game, we will be big contenders for the title.”

Spurs travel to Birmingham and after the comments from Modric and Bassong, only a win will suffice if they truly believe they are going to challenge for the title.

At 11/10 to beat Birmingham, the betting market makes Spurs the favourites for the game.

But Birmingham shocked reigning Premier League champions Chelsea in their last home game and have lost just four times at St Andrews since the start of 2008.

December is always a huge month in shaping the season for the Premier League clubs and Spurs face Birmingham, Blackpool and Aston Villa away from home, and Chelsea and Newcastle at White Hart Lane.

Should Harry Redknapp’s side emerge from that spell of five games with 10-12 points, then Bassong and Modric’s claims need to be taken seriously.

With Manchester City labouring recently, it seems that the 33/1 on offer for Spurs to win the Premier League offers the better value compared to the 9/1 for Man City.

Both teams will harbour ambitions of challenging at the top but at this moment in time, it seems Spurs are in the better position to do so.
