Poulter can fend off Tiger challenge at Chevron World Challenge
Published:It was just over a year ago that Tiger Woods had that car crash and everything started caving in around him.
Woods hasn’t got anywhere near the form he enjoyed prior his break from golf following revelations about his private life, but he is still 3/1 favourite to win his first tournament of 2010.
As well as being an event that Woods hosts, it’s also an event he has enjoyed considerable dominance over, having won it four times previously. However, he hasn’t entered the tournament for the past two seasons because of knee surgery in 2008 and injuries sustained in a car crash last year.
It’s a hugely impressive field at Sherwood Country Club with seven of the world’s top ten players making the trip to California. Second favourite is defending champion Jim Furyk (8/1) who is teeing up for the first time in competitive stroke play since his FedEx Cup win in September.
Another former winner, Luke Donald, is third favourite at 10/1. The Englishman – who won the event in 2005 – has enjoyed a typically solid season that included a win in the Madrid Masters and can never be ruled out.
However, one player certainly worth keeping an eye on is Ian Poulter. The world No.8 has been in brilliant form over the past few weeks, winning the Hong Kong Open a fortnight ago and finishing second after losing a play-off in Dubai last week.
With Poulter heading into the event in such a rich vein of form, backing the Englishman to win at 12/1 could certainly be worth a bet.
