Monfils set to shine under the support of 14,000 Parisians
Published:Andy Murray survived his wrist injury scare last night to book a place with Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Masters, but the Scot will need to be fully fit both mentally and physically if he is to beat the local favourite.
Monfils has a habit of disappearing in tough matches, he did so against Novak Djokovic in the US Open and against Rafael Nadal in the Japan Open final.
But Monfils was victorious under his home support in Montpellier just a fortnight ago and the Paris crowd will be a confidence boost to the Frenchman.
Having only beaten Murray once in the four times they’ve met, Monfils is the 9/4 underdog to progress to the semi-final, but considering Murray’s recent injury problems this is Monfils best chance to register his first hard court victory over Murray.
Murray will have the whole day to recover after enduring a marathon fight with Cilic last night, but it still remains to be seen just how damaged the Scotsman’s wrist is and at 1/3 to beat Monfils, Murray is too short to back once again.
However Monfils may have to win this one the hard way and the Frenchman is 9/2 to beat Murray 2-1.
Roger Federer vs Jurgen Melzer
Roger Federer is continuing to annihilate all before him as he continues to reassess his desire to finish the season strongly with his performances on the court.
Only two players have managed to take a set from Federer in his last 11 matches, Djokovic and Wawrinka, and Melzer’s odds of 6/1 to win in the BNP Paribas betting market suggest’s he has little to no hope of progressing.
Federer is as short as 1/4 to beat Melzer 2-0 and even with a handicap of -4.5 games, Federer is 4/5 to beat Melzer.
