Madison Du Berlais a big Newbury Hennessy betting price

Published:

David Pipe is optimistic that Madison Du Berlais can take advantage of a healthy pull in the weights to become the first horse to beat Denman three times when the pair line up in the Hennessy Gold Cup.

Madison Du Berlais may be 16/1 in the ante post Newbury Hennessy horse racing betting, but is set to be the recipient of close to two stone from last season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup runner up.

The horse has beaten Denman on two occasions in the past and Pipe is happy with his nine-year-old’s form after a satisfying spin in a recent hurdles outing at Exeter.

Pipe wrote on his website: “He put in a pleasing effort over hurdles on his reappearance at Exeter and that will have done him good.

“He won the Hennessy in 2008 and has since twice beaten Denman, so we are looking forward to renewing rivalries there.

“With a rating of 182 Denman will still leave many of his rivals out of the handicap proper, although Madison du Berlais will creep in with a nice racing weight.”

The one main thing against Madison Du Berlais is that he failed to register a victory last season, but he can be forgiven for chasing home Kauto Star twice and then focusing on the Grand National, in which he fell.

Madison Du Berlais did thrash Denman at Kempton last February by 23 lengths when only running off a four-pound lower weight, but this was over a slightly shorter trip.

However, the fact that Madison Du Berlais’ connections felt he had the stamina to stay the four miles of the Grand National should lead to the belief that he will have no trouble seeing out the 3m2f trip at Newbury.

Denman is the 4/1 favourite in the Newbury racing odds to win the Hennessy Gold Cup, with Weird Al and Diamond Harry among the other leading fancies. See the full ante post Newbury Hennessy racing odds.
