Keane to give youngsters first-team chances at injury-hit Ipswich
Published:Roy Keane has vowed to give Ipswich’s young guns their chance in the first team rather than ask for additional funds from the club as he attempts to come to terms with their current injury troubles.
Ipswich remain well in Championship promotion contention despite their home defeat to Barnsley, as they sit just two points outside of the play-off places.
They may find it difficult to remain in this position in the coming weeks as Keane has a lengthy list of absentees that he will have to do without.
However, Keane has revealed that he is not tempted to delve into the emergency loan market and will instead put his trust in some of the club’s young talents.
He told BBC Radio Suffolk: “It’s a case of where we’re at, the players we have available. It’s not a day of saying we need this and we need that, the only place for these young players to learn is out on this pitch.
“I do want to give the young players the experience of playing at home and in the Championship and make them better players in terms of the overall picture.”
Ipswich are now 40/1 to win the title in the Championship betting odds, but it may prove a tough ask to make up 12 points on current leaders Cardiff.
A long away trip to Hull is what lies next for Ipswich and Keane knows that his team have a decent record on the road this season with three wins and two draws from their eight away outings.
Keane has already been no stranger to giving youth a chance this season, with the likes of Tommy Smith, Tom Eastman, Connor Wickham and Luke Hyam all regularly featuring despite still being under the age of 21.
