Gerrard out for up to four weeks with hamstring injury
Published:Liverpool’s dreadful season took another turn for the worse today with the news that captain Steven Gerrard will be out of action for up to four weeks.
The 30-year-old was forced off in the 84th minute of England’s 2-1 friendly defeat against France last night following a twinge in his hamstring. And, according to Liverpool medical chief Dr Peter Brukner, the injury looks to be a lot worse than first suspected.
The Reds hierarchy were already fuming with England for making their talisman play for longer than the pre-agreed hour.
Physio Darren Burgess took to Twitter to call England “completely amateurish” and “disgraceful” for refusing to substitute Gerrard, and their mood is unlikely to have imporved with the latest developments.
Dr Brunker said: “He’s going to be out for a little while, I’m afraid. I’d imagine it could be three to four weeks.
“There were obviously circumstances last night which came together to result in Steven playing for a bit longer than we’d hoped, which is disappointing but there’s nothing we can do about that now.
“We’ll move on and work as hard as we can to get him back playing for Liverpool as soon as possible.”
Liverpool are currently at 4/9 to beat West Ham at Anfield on Saturday. But with Liverpool missing their captain and West Ham drawing their last three games, backing the Irons to bag a point at 3/1 is starting to look very tempting.
