Federer v Djokovic – Federer will end disappointing year on a high
Published:It’s been a pretty disappointing year by the high standards of Roger Federer.
It got off to the perfect start with a win against Andy Murray in the final of the Australian Open in January. However, he failed to add to his total of grand slams after that and lost in the quarter finals of Wimbledon to Tomáš Berdych – a result that meant he fell to No.3 in the world rankings.
Since then though he has reached eight consecutive semi-finals or better and has been in excellent form. He has also hired Paul Annacone – Pete Sampras’ former coach – in a move that seems to be paying dividends.
Federer said: “It took me a little bit to get over not regaining the Wimbledon crown, not being in the Wimbledon finals for I don’t even know how many years. That was a bit of a different feeling.
“But I had a nice vacation. So I was very confident that I was going to play well these next few months.
“I’ve been able to play how I usually like to play, mix it up, be aggressive. I probably got into a bit of a tendency to play somewhat passive, especially at Wimbledon.”
His new approach certainly seems to be working in London after sweeping into the semi-finals with comprehensive wins against David Ferrer, Andy Murray and Robin Soderling.
Federer has a 12-6 lead against Djokovic in their head-to-head meets, although the Serbian can look to his win against Federer at this year’s US Open for inspiration.
However, Federer looks on course to re-discover some of his best form and should be backed at 4/9 to come out on top against the world No.3.
